What car oil should I use?

Off course it's for a Subaru Legacy Twin Turbo. Since winter is almost over and my knowledge on oil is very minimum.

So, i'm going to turn to you guys ask, what is the best oil for the twin turbo (e.i Synthetic 10W-40, 15w - 50 so on, brand name definitely helps also)

It's at 125kms at the moment, last time I changed was 118kms.

the castrol magnatec in a 10w/40 goes fine, or any brand in that range. if its a daily keep changing it at regular 5000km intervals and pointless going for the epic $$ oil imo. 5w/30 is probably too low, and 15w/50 or higher will be unnecessary and just hurt your wallet.

On the official Castrol website. They suggest I use EDGE 5w-30 as it is made for high performance 4 cylinder car. I guess I'm going for that as I want good oil for my car.

you obviously didnt read what i wrote. for a car of moderate to higher kms 5/30 is to thin.

also use the search. many many opinions.. covered many many times.

5w30 is fine for a new engine but one with your mileage is better off with a heavier grade, eg 10w40.

Unless you're regularly doing track track dayz etc. you don't need to spend big $$$ on Edge, Magnatec is great value.

i ran 5w30 in my forrie at 190k, made for a very noisy 3-4 months while i ticked up the kms and $$ to change it out. 10w40 quietened things down when warm. (plus it's a buttload cheeper!!!)

when i was using castrol edge, the 10w60 was always more expensive than 5w30 grade and 10w60 almost never went on special.

duno what the mechanics used when did last oil change, i did it this time, i usually use 10w 40, never really boost tho,

also remember your legacy will take 4.5litres with new filter

My old Soob mechanic would tip the whole 5.0L pack in.

The extra 0.5L providing a bit of protection against the dread nugga nugga in high stress driving.

the way i see it is if theres plenty of oil in there and its changed frequently and treated well it should be as realiable as any other car out there, i drive my 1.4 sentra alot harder then the sti

Most packs are 4l so you need to buy a 1l also...marketing strategy. So watch that. Diesel packs are normally 5l petrol 4l.

10w60 costs its weight in gold, but comes in a 5'er fwiw

yea that suks big time with magnatec, the current valvaline is 5l tho, which i got on special for around $45 i think and magnatec was $30 odd but i would have needed another 1L

for another option, I find 10w40 valvoline Vr1 racing is a good all rounder and i have used it in all my cars, bit pricey when not on special but comes in 5lt and is under $50 fairly often at Super crap. though mine needs over 5lts.. i usually get around both issues by buying 2-3 at a time

I run 5w30 Castrol Edge, no issue serviced every 5,000km. Perfer it due to the Sub-Zero temperatures over winter.

Some people will agrue its a bit on the thin side, but never had any issues in saying that is quite a fresh motor.

Yeah i use the same now. GTX doesnt cut it size wise.

I'm not really a fan of 5w 30. Seen that stuff shear and it ain't pretty to think that it's supposed to be somewhat the blood of an engine. Heard many engines tick over quite noisily too. Good for small tolerances (I.e new vehicles) I just don't get why we are moving away from "the old days" which viscous oil wasn't such a bad thing.
