v1 ra vs. v7 6 speed

hi the gearbox in my Ra needs synchros really bad its non dccd, i have been offered a bargin 6speed from a v7. would the gearing be similar or am i better to keep and fix the stock box? bear in mind car is a trackday toy so fastest laptimes is the priority haha

depends how much you talking? Well what I mean is for example to rebuild a box could be pricey depending on weither you want to upgrade the parts or just fix it so it works. And the price of the 6speed(a stronger better box) should reflect on how much you think you would spend repairing the 5 speed. 5speed boxes are pretty cheap you could pick up a replacement for 300 but you don\'t know what your getting 2nd hand until you oepn it up or put it in the car

Cheap would be $1500 box only for v7. You need the same ratio rear diff but 99% sure your ra should be 3.9:1, so you could reuse your clutch and starter and just need an auto drive shaft to make it work . if your gonna up the power later its a good move.

only the v2 sti ra has the 3.9 rear diff. all other 5 speeds are 4.1 & 4.444. urs v unlikely to have the 3.9

so in terms of gearing a 6 speed is just as good if not better than a ra box? i thought ras were different to usual 5 speeds

The v7\'s are quite a bit stronger... 6 speed gearboxes in general are much much stronger.

I have a plate R160 R3.9 ratio diff F.S

The V1-v2 Ra Gearboxes are weak, the 1st and 2nd gears aren\'t wide like the models after and they break very very easily,

Can\'t compare a 5speed to a 6speed, Its apples and oranges..

Go for the 6speed Damn good box. Feels about the same ratio wise as the RA but you have sixth as well for cruising. (In your case higher speed) I did not regret my install. nice gate too. :) Sure it cost a bit more and i had to do diff as well as match axles etc, but wow! :o Worth it for sure! ;D ;D

What about the STI RA v2 gearboxes are they any different? Mine is starting to get a bit notchy so am considering rebuilding or a 6 speed conversion. As said above a 6 speed conversion should be relativly straight forward if i could retain all my rear diff ect? So all i would need would be box and auto drive shaft, is this correct?

yes you already have a 3.9 rear end if you run the v2 sti RA box.

you need the box, the shifter linkage etc, the driveshaft (auto or a 6mt one) and the gearbox / chassis mount.

Deff go 6 speed as long as it has the linkages ect. Otherwise a cheep 6 speed will quickly turn vey expencive
