STUCK Overheating issue

Hey guys have an overheating issue on my sf5 forester I have done water pump have checked thermostat and bypassed heater core and it still overheats.

Any ideas??

Is it making milkshake under the radiator cap?

Could be a seriously blocked radiator I guess, tried flushing it?

Sorry mate might be time to do some HG tests, aka TK test.

Does it seem to use coolant? is there water in the oil?

Its just clear cause im putting water in it and no water in oil its very odd how do I do or get hg tested

Silly question, but was it bled properly after you changed thermo?

B4 has a point, bleeding these systems can be a bitch. If an air lock was left in the system it would cause overheating.

To test head gasket basics tests are, water in oil or vise versa, bubbles coming out of overflow bottle. if you want to get more serious garages will do a TK test to test for combustion gases in coolant, also a compression test and cylinder leak down test, of which both will give you a definite answer.

It doesn\'t bubble out of overflow I didn\'t bleed it properly but this is what happened

1st run after doing water pump took it for a drive it was fine then started climbing and top rad hose popped off didn\'t do it tight enough.

2nd run topped water back up then went for drive and got hot and heater was blowing cold air. So I then bypassed core.

3rd run took for a drive then same as 1st run but bottom hose

4th run was fine until climbing and then rad cap started leaking with the pressure

And then I gave up too dark to carry on

If the heater is cold either its blocked or its got air lock.

keep this bypassed and reblead. check the bottom rad hose - is this hold or cold?

They were both warmish not hot though

with out seeing it, id pick it has more air lock in it.

By bottle (to work out exactly how much water you\'ve fed in, how much water are you putting into it?

assuming the water pump change the everything was ok before that point?

Around 7-8 ltrs to fill up it was overheating before water pump was done so I presumed it was that and changed the old was pretty corroded and had a bit of play on the wheel

7-8l is a lot..

if it was overheating before it doesnt sound good. SF5 is a turbo forester right?

try filling and bleeding as best you can, have the heater core bypassed, and take it out for a VERY VERY gentle drive for 5-10mins, stay off boost completely, under 50kms and nana the s*** out of it. bring it up to temp and report back if it starts overheating.

if no overheat, give it a few squirts on the boosty and report what happens.

What is your radiator cap like? Dont think it should be leaking under pressure?

they do:

a) if its failing (as you\'ve hinted at above)

b) its done a HG and pressurising the water

yeah Sf5 is turbo ej205 I\'ll give that a try when I get home tonight how do I bleed it properly

stick the whole motor up as high as possible compared to rear wheels. (i.e jack up the front of the car)

or park it on a steep hill, facing up hill, fill with water, and turn car on and continue to add water as it circulates.

Yeah, face it uphill, leave the cap off and keep topping it up till it has no more bubbles coming out, it\'s fully warmed up, and the fans have cycled on and off a couple of times.

I\'ve found that on some cars, at idle, the pumps don\'t pump enough always to force the water through the heater, or enough water through the radiator to cycle the fans off. I always slip a feeler gauge under the throttle screw while I\'m bleeding them, so they run just slightly above idle and I can see circulation in the system..

Also you could try reverse flushing radiator and heater core, get some more water flow happening.

Did you put a new thermostat in or just check the old one?

Possibly semi blocked radiator, sticky thermostat or radiator cap that\'s lost its tension/seal

id start with the latter & go from there
