New key!?!

So my car only came with 1 key (99 wrx), so I thought I\'ll potter down to Mr minit and get a new one. Much to my surprise he inserts it into this box, the lcd screen pops up with a message, he then advises me it\'s $180 for a new key!!!

I never realised the keys had a chip in them.

I\'m a bit tight to want to pay that much, is there a cheaper option?

I\'m assuming the chip is in the key to stop the car being hot wired?

Well I was wondering why there was a pic of a key in the dash with a red light that goes off when you put the key in the ignition.

Sae wut? I didnt need a key to open/start my V5/6 foz or V5 wrx both imports.

Ring subaru and check with them.

My v6 foz wasn\'t chipped, neither is my v7.... Both jap import. Might be a NZ new thing? I\'d be ringing Subaru... If it\'s the remote central locking thing, that may be what he\'s charging for...

It is nz new, no central locking on the key.

I\'ll give subaru a call later on.

A lot of NZ new have the immobiliser - in - key thing (I don\'t know subaru specifics just a general kind of thing)

Basically like you said, a transponder in the key itself - which explains the little light on the dash you\'d think

If the key has 9 dots on the back of the plastic then it has immob

NZ new leggy, foz, and impreza had immob on 90% of cars since 98

Sounds to me like it is a transponder key

$180 seems a bit steep even for a transponder key, BUT saying that if you really want to have a shock ask Subaru how much it is genuine ( $700-$800 for a genuine toyota one $1800 genuine Merc)

thats cheap o me as a transponder key : especially when you realise a a BMW replacement can go near $450 for a coded key

I rang Subaru and they wanted $350+gst and it would take a couple days for them to get the key

So I went to Ross Galt and they cost $139 and did it then and there.

I guess it\'s just another safety net, someone wants to pinch the car, they better make sure they have the key.

Lol- if someone want ya wheels they are gone - immobiliser or not

Smashed the barrel off, cut your seatbelt out ( to use as a tow rope) and car is gone

I realise that, it\'s just a deterrent from low riders I guess.
