TD05-16G Hybrid? vs VF2X

So I had my v4 sti tuned today on E85. When I bought the car it already had the PBMS forged shortblock, Link G4 and a TD05-16G turbo. I think the turbo has a different exhaust housing or some modifications by Steve Murch but not certain.

The turbo seems to have run out of puff fairly early. The tuner was able to get the boost up to 1.5Bar at 5000rpm but he had to quickly drop it off to about 1.3Bar at 7000rpm. He said the turbo is a major bottleneck and I would have been much better off with a VF23 or VF22 (which I think would have been stock on this car).

Can anyone work out why the previous owner would have changed from a VF22 to a 16G?

The car is set up as a hill climb/track car. The only thing I can think of is that he went to a TD05 as it's rebuildable, and therefore better to use with anti-lag.

If I was to upgrade the turbo in the future what should I go for? TD05-18G or 20G or VF22?

Edit: Changed 2.5Bar MAP to 1.5Bar MGP

Measure the wheels. I think you will find youre just running out of turbo. A td05 16g is roughly the same size as a vf but has more turbine potential. A big 16g gives slightly more than a vf. Looks like egbp is high possibly a collapsed muffler or something?

A 20g with a murch cut turbine is the ticket and cost roughly the same as a secondhand vf.

Go bigger. Garrett gtx2876r or gtx30 something. Holset hrc35 from Steve Murch etc.

The turbos you listed, plus your current one are well suited to 98/100 octane but won't flow enough for e85 to be worth swapping between any of them I reckon.

What about that sc42 that someone was selling either here or one of the facebook pages. That's a bigger standard location turbo isn't it. I've always thought the 20g needs to be on a td06 turbine otherwise it's too mismatched for my liking. The td05/18g does sound like a good hybrid. WRXER's one performed well back in the day.

Johnnynz yea nobody buy that he actually needs to fit it. Murch works a bit of magic on turbines proved it with mine. Untouched td05 20g im not a fan of. Mine was a 56.5/79mm comp td05 murched turbine 7cm and egbp 1.26:1@20psi iirc. Recorded somewhere.

Koom']Will be 2.5 bar absolute. So 1.5 bar gauge pressure.

Yeh sorry, I'm used to seeing MAP values, not MGP. Should read 1.5Bar.

Is it a genuine td05 with the 90deg snout converted to straight? Pics.

Good question, didn't think of that. Can you tell from these pics?

that compressor wheel doesn't look to good. Looks like a 16g with the bend cut off and a straight inlet fitted. an 18g version of that same turbo should be able to push 240wkw. I don't know much about e85 but would expect the a similar power with lower EGT ... And should be able to boost 20ish psi pretty commfy. I'm pretty much doing the same thing on my build soon

Thanks for the info guys. I don't want to go for a big expensive turbo for this car. At the moment it's set up to do hill climbs etc, at some stage it may end up doing the odd rally and therefore needing a restrictor so a big turbo would be wasted. I think when I'm due for a new turbo I'll go for something a bit bigger. Maybe an 18g or a vf22.

I can't get the compressor off now as the intake manifold is back on. Next time it is stripped down I'll take some more photos. What's the difference between the different TD05-16gs and how do you tell which is which?

put that apexi turbo thats for sale on it .

yeah what ever is on if pretty underwhelming . it falls over within 1000 rpm of reaching full boost .

looks like the stock graph for a 22b . 2.2 litre with a vf23 = punchy but yeah could be better

Like Clint said swapping the td05 for anything vf is wasting money. A vf22 will not run above 20psi safely. You are better off modifying//rebuilding the td05 to where you want it to be as the oem chra are solid units.

There are a very good selection of slip on housing and comp wheels and turbine wheels out there!

That apexi is just going to be a mildly better vf need to put a p20 on it too. Still half the money to simply upgrade what you have.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
