Catalytic converters? Needed for w.o.f?

Hey guys, have used the search and have'nt found an answer, also probably a newbie kinda question.

I'm looking at getting a new exhaust system for my wrx from the turbo back. But was wondering if catalytic converters were required to pass a w.of. I have seen many exhaust systems without them though recently read something that said it is a requirement?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers,

I thought a couple years ago they passed legislation that a catalytic converter connot be removed from an exhaust system. So muffler shops had to chop your old cat into the new system.

Not too sure on whether it was actually passed i just remember getting a whole new system made for the Calibra before the July deadline.

As mentioned, nope.

However, one day we can safely assume that emissions testing at wof time will be the go.

Pretty much all new vehicles now are made to strict emissions standards and i would assume that in a few years time when these mid 2000s vehicles become "the norm" we will see this insiduously slide into the wof check.

You can buy a larger diameter cat to stop your original one choking your flow too much but unsure of costs. I just elected to ditch it altogether!

Decided to check up on it and found these lines in some LTSA reports.

"Comments are also being sought on proposed requirements

prohibiting the removal of, or tampering with, emissions control

equipment fitted in a vehicle."

I had a quick look but couldnt find out if that law actually got passed or just quietly dropped but im SURE in July 2007 they made it law as thats what prompted me to buy a whole new system before the deadline.

Either way if a muffler shop is willing to do the work for you, and it doesnt look obvious and rangi that youve chopped out the cats - i think youll be fine

Was looking at being passed along with tighter emission controls, however again too expensive for garages to setup the gear and along with for when cars require them ie New models etc... Been put into the too hard basket for now. Was meant to be in place by 07/08.... Well its 09 now and still nothing has happened lol

Also for the fact it's been proven the cats are completely useless after x amount of k's anyhow, which rules out a good majority of cars in NZ.

as far as i know they are still working on that emissions law

I just recently removed cat from my n/a legacy and it passed wof a week later no issues other than no rubber on clutch pedal and brakes lol

I have been told that if I don't get my cert by January 10, I WILL have to have factory cats inplace, but yeah info really seems to vary from place to place. This is just what my cert guy has told me.

If any of you ARE 'planet conscious', and, yes, i am using that in a derogatory manner...

...and you DO have a catalytic converter fitted to your car (and almost no-one who does has ever changed it for a new one), then, you'd be doing the trees, fluffy bunnies and all the other creatures a HUGE favour by removing it and running a strait piece of pipe!

Cat's work for several thousand km's, and then they stop trapping harmful emissions and begin to disperse them...a compound similar to nerve gas (so i'm told).

So, save the planet, and run a straight through pipe!

Oh, and while i'm at it:

NO, the phenomenon known as 'Global Warming' is not describing humanity's heating of our environment; it is a natural cycle of the planets ecosphere.

The average mean temperature of our planet has been dropping since records began...(FACT!)

...and, by the way:

Those pesky CFC's that were banned from aerosol cans; Chlorofluorocarbons were blamed for destroying the Ozone layer, whereby Chlorofluorocarbons released free chlorine atoms which DO destroy Ozone. However, what the EXPERTS forgot to mention is that, naturally (and this HAS been going on for millions of years folks), the oceans give off billions and billions of tons of free chlorine atoms every year...

our donation to this? a few million tons a year...

yeah, it's us, no, really... ::)

You can't fool all of the people, all of the time, but, if you keep them dumb enough, you can fool most of them, most of the time...

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
