crimping Help me!

I've always struggled with crimping

I have a cheap crimping tool - trying to crimp the covered (blue, red, yellow) crimp ends. The wire always seems to be lose!

any advice on how to crimp properly?

haha could not help it...

I sometimes use the inner bits of the crimp tool to get a tight seal

as you can see the one on the left (our left) is not water tight...

I like how you managed to leep a car theme (as they in a "jumkyard" aprently).

What i also like is how he kept his orginal label on the hat, incase of return. Helps people in retail a lot to have things in "as bought" condition.

Cheap crimping tool, there's your problem. Why not just use a hammer and bash it flat.

well after after 20yrs of mechanical work about 10yrs ago i started using vice grips.

You start off with the standard crimp tool and then you give it that extra squeeze with the vice grips! Never failed me 8)

I use a set of "better" crimpers and it has a section for crimping non insulated crimpes which has a spike which goes thru the insulation and crimps the steel inside the insulation when I am back to work tomorrow I will take a few quick photo or 2 and post a how too

those crimp tools are around $80 for a cheep one tho .

so just smash it till its tight

Buy better crimp tool or just remove the Blue/Red/yellow plastic, solder lug on, and put heat shrink over it.

I use a relatively cheap one, but it was still $25 from Repco, one of the Narva ones with the nicer cushioned grip. Enables you to press a lot firmer and get a better seal. Do the first crimp at the very end so the plastic of the crimp grips the sheathing of the cable. Then do two crimps at the other end, one from either side. Doing it this way has always worked for me.

I use a Weidmuller ratchet type crimper. They crimp in a Hex patten, not a oval or W crimp. But not cheap...

+1 if its a perminent fixture then do it right first time

will also solve any faulty contact problems

I use a Hella 8273 crimp tool

It was about $70 trade at Twiggs, several years ago. No it's not similar to those cheap orange handle ones at DSE. Those are crap, as I used to have one.

Yeah that big one of Daves to crimp the 2 gauge.

About $360. Normal RRP of around $500ish. Not sure of brand, but it was in the Narva catalogue.

when i had my van broken into i lost so many tools and my crimpers even had a big hydrulic one for massive cable lol. but the one spark_38 shows, that type are great, well mine was great (different brand but same thing) all i have left is the ferrel crimper of the same style :'(

For Welli folk I can help with crimping big wire if you're doing a battery relocation or something and need some lugs put on in a way they they'll never come off.

Yeah. I got the one off Dave when we did Ben's battery. Tis only the mini one though haha but good enough for 50mm

get a pair of Klien pliers, thats what we use at work, crimper between the handles, and can use as standard pliers for everything else
