Steam coming from engine bay :-(

Recommended Posts

If I'm facing the engine bay I have steam coming from the bottom right hand side of the engine after running the car for a while.

The water in the radiator and the reservoir are not going down and none of the oils are either. The car's also not misbehaving. I'm stumped ???

The burn has a rubbery burn mixed with anti-freeze smell...

I had this, the hose clamp on the bottom radiator hose was loose and coolant was dribbling out and getting flicked onto the headers. I've also had leaking rocker covers but never had steam from the oil hitting the exhaust? Definitely had a bad smell though

you need to figure out if its steam or smoke . steam will be coolant burning. smoke will be oil burning . . . common as subaru feature for the rocker cover to seep oil and it to drip and burn on manifold . . . coolant burning could be coming from water pump or tho hoses around the water pump

lol lol lol last time i mentioned my fix i got laid into . . . mainly by people who have never built an engine in there life . . . i have built hundreds and used silicone on gaskets with no problems . you just don't go crazy and put heaps on . . a light smear helps stop the gaskets leaking . .

waits to be shot down

The old Factory Service Manual I have for the BC5 era cars specifies a bit of Three Bond 1215 on the seals. Specifically around the cams as its a bad shape for a nice seal. I usually smear some across the whole lower sealing surface aswell.

yeah of course you don't need to pull engine to do rocker covers . just a bit of oil leaks onto ground put flattened card board boxs under your car . . just don't put so much silicone on that it has a build up inside the head . . and once your done wipe the oil off the bottom of the heads or you will keep getting that stink smell

What's coming from my car is definitely steam, it definitely isn't coming from the exhaust either and the smell isn't burning oil. Subtech reckons it's the water pump from the phone convo we had so I'm taking it to them next week. Can't say I don't agree considering where the steam's coming from but we'll see...

Can I get the whole thing fixed under a mechanical warranty through Autosure?

not sure bout that. depends though. cambelt and water pump and all tensioners and idlers should be changed at 100000km . guess if its not changed no warranty ? if you jack car up you will see if water pump is leaking . . you can see the bottom of the water pump coming out of the cam cover and the bottom radiator hose attaches to the thermostat housing which is a part of the water pump :-)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
