Unequal Length Headers vs Equal Length on a Twin Scroll Turbo Setup

Hey guys,

Been thinking about this for a while now, and have read up that this probably shouldn't be done. Nonetheless, wanted to know for sure from you guys and if there are any alternatives.

I've got a 2003 WRX STI (V8), which I am pretty sure is twin scroll, and am pretty sure has EL headers (sounds like an evo rather than an old school suby - No rumble as such). Before i knew much about subys, one of the main reasons for buying this was for the good old suby rumble that we all love. Now that I've owned my v8 and researched, I know why its non existent (exhaust pulses etc.). Anyway, I am wondering if i can get the best of both worlds by switching headers.

Will switching to UEL headers completely negate the positive benefits of twin scroll and possibly cause engine damage (or so I read - back pressure on one cylinder only etc.)?

Was thinking of something like this: http://www.rallysportdirect.com/fits/2004-subaru-impreza-wrx-sti-2-5/exhaust-headers-and-manifolds/tom-193082-tomei-expreme-unequal-length-exhaust-manifold

Is semi-tuned another alternative? I have heard the name floating around but haven't got any facts about positives and negatives, or even what it does. I'm guessing its half way between EUL and EL?

Any thoughts and experience on this would be appreciated.

So basically you just want the noise

Anything you do going to un-equal length will be less ideal than equal, just accept that and make your choice

So it's up to you if it's worth spending hundreds to go backwards (hundreds? over a thousand? I dunno)

Plenty of people spend thousands in search of the right look with no regard to practicality, so I say do what you want. I choose air filters based on the sort of sucky noise they make so I can't judge :D

Hell you could just swap the whole manifold and turbo setup to a VFwhatever and an old RS legacy exhaust manifold for ultimate old school boxer noise if you wanted

Maybe you should have listened when you bought it and gone "wait, that's not the noise I want" and not bought it

Personally I like the EL sound, the boxer noise is pretty bogan these days and EL sounds mint when it's doing loud boosty things

I'll just throw it out there, coz I want a twinscroll setup and have EL 4-2-1 syms headers, a giant baffled sump and a low km no crack vf30.

I know it's unlikely but If you want to work something out just pm me

Yeah but these are way better then rumble, makes it sound like its on crack, as you already know ;) throw in the rotational and you confuse everyone hahaha

Stahhhhhp, nobody is going to be dumb enough to swap away a twinscroll setup for a SS just to get some noise.

Hahaha yeah na not looking to swap out the twin scroll. Just trying to find out what header options there are to get that rumble, without sacrificing power :)

someone correct me if im wrong, but to run a twin scroll setup correctly you NEED equal length headers...

Get some high lift cams and a free flowing exhaust to improve both the sound and the performance at the same time.

If you really want to sound like a boyracer, get a BOV.

Naw, it's more about valve overlap and split pulses than length. Length doesn't hurt though.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
