ks per tank of gas

As i said previously, i don't think 98 has ANY mileage advantage over 95 gas - i put $70 of BP 98 in last fill up, and disconnected the battery terminals for about 10mins to reset the ecu. I only got to 370kms before the fuel light first came on, and filled up just before 400. Although $70 isn't quite a full to-the-brim tank, its pretty close. (full on fuel gauge), Usually i get to at least 400 before the light comes on.. therefore i think i can already conclude that 98 IS NO BETTER.

This fill up i have put in 70dollars of 95 for comparison. I know gas prices went up slightly, but as i used a petrol discount voucher, this should be offset. Will post results of this tank once it's empty.

Phase 2 engines are much better on gas though.

I've observed about 10-15% better fuel economy from 98 than 95 in my 2002 GTB. Thats more than enough to offset the higher price of 98, and the extra power and reduced risk of detonation is a nice bonus!

On the topic of thirsty damn cars...why the HELL is my N/A suddenly slurping down an entire tank in about 500-550km >:( Sure at night it seems to have a LOT more torque than it did but cripes...I'm getting tired of pumping gas :-X

I'm not gonna go to cheaper fuels, because every time I do it, it about equals itself for a week then gets worse! Lmao.

  • 3 weeks later...

test update: as i said previously, i disagree with the '98 is freakin awesome' fanclub, as from 70bucks of BP 98 i only got 370kms before the fuel light came on. i removed the battery terminals hoping to rest the ecu before i filled up also.

From 70 bucks of 95 from pak n save fuel, i got 410kms before the fuel light came on! i didnt even bother to reset the ecu, and i went to the last clubsub meet on this tank and i STILL got BETTER mileage! 40k's is a BIG difference, and i think this totally proves my theory... Fuel prices and my driving style and destinations were similar on both tanks.

However what exactly i proved isn't quite certain... either 98 from BP is crap (as i,ve been told by a couple people), pre phase-II engines do not receive any benefits from 98, or my car is just a bit strange..

perhaps the next step will be trying out 98 from Mobil... everybody reset your trip meters next fill up and try it for yourselves!

maybe if you hadnt have reset your ecu your results would be more reliable. Or reset the ecu both times. Every reset you loose optimal maps therefore causing more petrol to be used before the ecu gets it right. I dont really care about milage i mean i did buy a subaru haha... The thing is, all of the people who buy 98 do so because they want less det in the engine. Its why i get it

i'm sorry but i seriously can't believe anyone that has posted their fuel economy stats here because my BE5 '99 manual only gets around 350 max around town on 98 full tank... there must be something fishy in my engine

What about on the open road though? Most of the fuel quotes here seem to be a mixture of the two or predominantly open road driving...

I average around 350km around town too, although if I visit the Hutt a bit that improves things being motorway driving.

+1, I get barely 400km around town in my psycho legacy. We got 200km out of a $50 yesterday running around between storage facilities etc...without too much manic boosting too, as she doesn't really wanna in the heat.

As above, run a FEW tanks and reset the ECU both times - also, there is a difference between Mobil and BP. It lies in their additives; also note BP is the more expensive premium fuel! It goes through like cheap liquor at a teenager's party in BOTH my cars. The Mobil is far more frugal (if such a word can be applied to the Legacy).

Didnt someone on here say they got 5 extra kw from an NA when changing from 95 to 98 ill have a search and see if i can find it. people pay alot more than 5$ a tank for that much extra power.

i reset the ecu before the tank of 98, not the tank of 95.. if anything shuldn't this give the 98 tank the advantage? Yet i still get 40k's more out of the 95... And with a loss of 40kms of mileage, do you really think i want to run say 5 tanks of 98 through just to make sure the tank results are consistent? Thats potentially 200km of mileage lost!! No thanks..

In my experience, they actually run like thirsty pigs for a while - but this is with an N/A and an old turbo. It takes a few hundred kms of stropping around before they finally understand what fuel they're on and go from there. I'd say it'd give the 95 the advantage.

But if you've found you prefer to run on 95, that's all good. I'm still firmly in the NO TOUCHY brigade unless I have to; 130,000km on my Impreza in 4 years on 98 and it's in mint condition engine-wise (let's not talk about the suspension).

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
