I herd somewhere that 4WD's need to have all the same tread, is this true?

yarp, is true farks with the 4WD system im told, and any tyre place will tell you the same thing if you go in and go to buy less than 4 tyers for a 4WD they will advise you to replace em all at same time, im up for a full set as soon as i can afford it, 5mm left on fronts & 2mm left on backs, i guess i could look around for some second hand ones with 5mm left on them but would be a nightmare to find i imagine

Was Snowing pretty mad out in Upper Hutt when i went to drop the car to Ricks place earlier, was snowing all the way back on the train till got to Ngauranga (at sea level even ) then got a blanket of hail when i got off the bus in Brooklyn lol

i still remember the massive dumping in CHCH in 1992 when i was a kid, was Capital O for awesome, at least a foot or more in some places

Managed to get through to work today, getting off my girlfriends st was the hard part haha a guy in a Terrano saw me scraping the snow off my car and said " I don't like your chances" but it went fine, amazing how well the all wheel drive works haha, was fine once I got on the main roads, the grader had been through so no issues there

you cant have 2 DIFFERENT makes of tires especially snows on front and streets on back etc

3mm aint gunna do jack, agree not ideal but I have drivern 100,000 kms like this (only ever gettin 2x new tires EVER at any one time)

fair enough, i guess everyone's opinion is different on what to do. 2 tyres is more to my budget right now than 4, i do need to at least get 2 new back tires pretty damn soon

hehe ask a tire salesman if you should buy 2 or 4

if you scrap the 2mm tread the new ones will be closer to the 5mm anyway, within allowable differences for diff to cope with
