98 Octane question

Stoffa's thread made me think of this... I'm running a Link G4 and it's tuned purely for 98 octane.

As such I basically have to plan my roadtrip routes around where I can get 98... pretty silly huh? But worth it for what happens when you flatten the go-pedal, IMO.

But if push came to shove, and I had to put 95/96 in it, what could I do? Just totally nana it? Or should I keep a wee box of those Octane booster shots in the spare tyre well or something, just in case? Do they actually do anything?

finding 98 shouldn't be too bad, just fill up all the way when you visit the major centres. if you have to run it on 95/96, keep it off boost and you'll be fine. then drive it down as low as you can before filling it all the way up again with the good stuff

also depends how close to the edge your tune is. but generally you could run it like sultan says. just keep it off boost if you REALLY have to fill up, fill up the minimum required, drain as much as pos and refill to the lid with 98,

To the welly peeps i have a +20l jerry can im sure i could loan you if you wished ~ half a tank worth in my car.

Im going to have a word to my tuner today about it, but I think I would be ok to run some 95 due to the lack of detonation he came across when doing my tune. In my case my low boost is 45 kw less than my high boost setting.

I do have a 1L of Fuchs octane booster in the garage, it doesn't have very good mixing instructions though. doesn't tell you how much to add per litre.

I'll report back after talking to my tuner today

have asked the same question before and did some logging to check

on a 98 tune, filled with 91 and drove reall nana like and logged stuff and there was no det

by nana drive i mean no boost at all

no hard accelerate in fact a diesel 96 hiace out accelerated me in my nana test lol

anyway, so as long as u drive with the same output as a 1 litre toyota yaris then its good.. oh and not to rev any more than 3500 under no circumstance as thats what i logged up to anyway

ur foot to the pedal is king and use a little as possible..u will be fine

For what it's worth, I was running out of fuel coming back from Taupo megameet. I had no choice but to stop at, hmm, Turangi maybe, and put 95 into it.

Drove quite normally on all the way to I think Paraparaumu where I topped up with 98.

Made zero difference to the car long term.

I had this same issue a while back when I was traveling around in my trueno with a G3, I asked the tuner and he basically said carry a good name brand bottle of octane booster and use that if you have to full up on 98 and just dont thrash it, you just dont wanna use that octane booster too often as I am told it has some additives that can build up through repeated use. but once in a blue moon should be fine unless your tuner has really gone to the edge as others have suggested.

Do Links have any knock correction at all? Like a stock ECU? Or is it down to how a tuner tunes the Link for the petrol used on the tune, then add some variables so the ECU knows what to do with it detects knock/change in fuel?

after speaking to my tuner, he told me to not risk it as my car was tuned for 98 and if I wanted to run 95 he could do another tune with less timing and switch between the two. He said not to run octane booster as 95 runs a different stioshimetric(SP?) value to 98.

It may not cause any imediate damage but im not going to risk it on my brand new engine.

I'm taking an extra 40L onboard and only use 95 and octane booster as a last resort

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
