Time for a new driveshaft ?

Hey guys, some of you might know that I\'ve bad the most annoying noise that I haven\'t been able to identify or pinpoint. Local mechanic agreed to loom at it and we went for a short drive, got back to workshop and put it on the hoist. Turns out the driveshaft is cavetating and when under load it\'s off balance and rattles etc, the guy reckons its the universal joint that\'s run dry or something. Gonna head to Roscoes I. Ashburton tomorrow and pick one up, $120 ish seems ok to me. Are these fixable or is it best and easier to just put a new/secondhand one in and save the hassle?

Cheers

@kiwi-fozze, if something shit or totally out of the ordinary is gonna happen I\'ve learnt to accept it\'ll almost always happen to me or my shit, lol. Probably just gonna go with getting the drive shaft from roscoes and get the mechanic to put it in, he can use the hoist etc. As much fun as it sounds like I just can\'t be arsed being under the car trying to swing a hammer, lol.

  • 1 month later...

joints dry out wear becoming noisy/vibration especially noticable at 90 kph, without much noticabe side play, easy but fiddly to replace, patience required in doing, buy replacement universal kits and DIY, as 2nd hand drive shaft could be worn just the same.

need vise, circlip pliers to remove retaining circlips on each cup (hold yoke/shaft in vise) and the and good selection/right sized sockets to punch out old worn cups / tap in gently new ones carefully until centralised exposing each circlip recess on each cup inorder to replace circlips securely.

have replaced ones on my brumby so guessing similar?

and to the purests that are horified by me suggesting/using sockets as drifts/punches lm a total self taught bush mechanic ex farmer :P

ok sorry wasn\'t aware of this guess my outback similar? haven\'t taken much notice before, must crawl under and have a look.

Legacy and impreza ones have the universals held in by the metal deformed so alot harder than brumby/hilux etc

The manual says that the drive shaft is balanced... and if removed, must be replaced with the bolts all in the same holes...

meaning the 4 bolts at the front of the rear diff of course... hard to imagine... but it\'s in there...

Shit! never did that when replacing mine on brumby, figured that bolts/nuts all same size / weight. haven\'t noticed any different although hard to know as vibrations/noise from worn universals was getting bad when l finally got round to doing them.

Sorry, I didn\'t mean the bolts had to be in the same holes... I meant the holes at the end of the shaft and the holes on the diff, had to be matched back up...

I have replaced 100\'s of drive shafts and have never ever made sure that the holes were in the same position :) never had a vibration issue either :)

my 2 piece shaft bolt holes are offsett so they only line up once per rotation

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
