percentage of cars that get rebuilds

i am hoping for some conformation that a ~v4 sti does have a decent chance of making the 170,000km ish mark without having a rebuild?

obviously it does hugely depend on the maintenance/ how its been treated etc etc. But i read about so many people needing rebuilds on this forum that its just plain scary, i have zero chance of getting 4-8k for a rebuild :-[. Of course there arent threads on people saying how they havent needed rebuilds, so im not quite sure of the 'norm', but you fellows have been in the subie game alot longer than the few months i have.

cheers guys!

If your Subaru STI has done 170tho k's and you can't afford a rebuild then sell it and buy something you can afford :P

Haha but yeah its really hard to predict when these big end bearings will go but at higher k's it is certainly more likely.

The only way to really enjoy these car's is to drive them like they were designed to be driven and then keep some money aside if something goes wrong. Rather than pussying around in them concerned that they will blow up next time you put your foot down.

The reason you see so many rebuilds on here is purely because people want advice on how to do them etc. Much like people complaining about an ISP or similar. You rarely ever have someone ring the helpdesk and say my internet is fantastic thanks! :P

Have a look on trademe a high percentage of the Sti being sold have some sort of replacement engine.

Put it this way would you buy an Sti with 170km on the original engine...

sorry, mine has done 150,000kms, but looking to keep it for the next few years --> 170,000kms.

but yeah i agree with all you.

yeah i did just have a look through trademe, heaps have had rebuilds, some at much lower kms ~100,000. Scary stuff.

For what it's worth mine made it to 200,000 before popping it's clogs. It gets to at least one event a month.

my WRX has done 174,000kms on original engine, ive owned since 118,000km and am only nz owner.

oh and i really like to drive it how it was made to be driven but i also look after it, never been over 10,000kms between servicing and i actually do them every 5,000kms now because i service cars for a living and know how important it is.

also most of the time it has run 15psi boost up from the standard 10psi, also ran the sti ecu/turbo for quite a while til now.

theres no sure way to tell when big ends are gonna go, it just kind of happens random from what i've seen.

My car has just clicked over 181k, i dont nanny it too much, but its standard and I service it every 5k. My mate has a WRX on here which is nearly up to 200k and he drives it ALOT harder then me and he's not had a rebuild, just regular servicing and repectful modding

I don't expect my, or my mates car to go any time soon.

I've got $100 says it doesn't make 170 ;D

Also my v7 clicked over 143 and I sold it as I thought it was getting a bit long in the tooth.

A wrx and STi are to very different beasts. For starters an STi engine is more highly strung and that is compounded by the type of people that buy STi's. Lets face it you don't buy an STi to drive it like a nanny. So there is at least a 50/50 chance that it has been raped at some stage in it's life.

then there is the fact that from v3 to the v6's with the EJ207 engine (not including) Subaru had some reliability issues that plagued most 211kw version engines (GTB's included).

If it was me I would sell it and let it be someone else's problem, then use the money to buy one with a re-built engine.....Or start saving for the inevitable rebuild.

ive had 5 turbo subarus, not one has run a bearing on me, even my bf5 that had 250k on the motor in it ( never been open besides rocker covers ) that used to run 14-16 psi with a td05, fmic etc and the engine itself never gave me trouble, its all about using good fuel, keeping the revs down and doing regular service.

Ver3,4 have the ej20k, ver5,6 is ej207, the K engine seems the worst

Another thing we have to remember is when buying an import car we dont know the history...

for example my v7 sti so far broken a reverse fork, probably got it with a hair line fracture and totally fucked it after so much use, plus the clutch was fucken rooted including flywheel ( excessive burn marks and grind marks) plus excessive play on the turbo! my cousin own the car before me and she drove it like a nana until reverse went then sold it to me for $8000 and i spent so far $4000 on it, so hopefully the engine wont give out next :o

So beware of import cars!!! they may look and drive good but never know whats damage laying underneath that surface metal that gets worse the more you drive it!!!

My V1 WRX-SA has done 240,000 odd km now, driven hard every day, but not till warm and services are done every 5000km. Am currently running 15psi, but I think the turbo may be on its last legs... oh well... TD05 here I come

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
