This may not be news to some but it shocked me

On a recent trip to Christchurch i went past a speed camera and like always i checked to see if it had that tell tale orange lens that lets you know the camera is active. I saw orange, slowed down and had a good look at the camera as we went past. Turns out the camera wasn't active, dodgy pricks had put some bloody crinkled, orange cellophane in it to make it look active. How dodgy is that ! Anyone else noticed this happening anywhere else?

Nope... but the other day at a very well known pole-camera (Ngauranga Gorge) that a LOT of people come up to at 100, brake to 80, then accelerate again, they had a camera van parked beside it snapping everyone ~50m before the pole camera. Cunning.

They do that all the time, as a matter of fact. It does amaze me that people do continue to get snapped at a furious rate by the downhill facing one

My, umm, laser parking assist equipment has an FAQ that goes roughly along these lines:

Q: Why doesn't this kit come with rear facing laser heads?

A: Because if you drive past the individual in the day-glow vest acting suspiciously beside his poorly-concealed car with funny lights on top, and still don't slow down, then you probably shouldn't drive quickly in the first place

Easier to just keep an eye on the speedo and deal with it like a bawse. Slowly learning this lesson, as should everyone ;D

The good highway cops are pretty on to it now, using instant-on, they'll pull your speed in 100ms which is a lot faster than you can brake...

I wasn't speeding and in general don't. I was simply pointing out what i thought was a dodgy/cheap way of making it seem the camera was actually active.

Generally you can pick up them pinging other drivers up to 2kms off on straight road.

Soon as i see Ka band i button off for at least 5 mins.

You have to be super unlucky to get pinged ie driving along alone with no one within a few kms of you.

I have a system that works 100% every time, and believe me it works or your money back, have been refining this system over many years and finally it is perfect............. I will share for free here though.

dont go over the speed limit ever and you want get or ever have to worry about speeding tickets or speed cameras ever again. ;D

Ehhh come on. Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. We drive performance cars, whether it's on a passing lane or just open road overtaking or whatever, if you're telling me your speedo never goes for a bit of a swing to the right that's taking a rather holier-than-thou attitude.

I'm a strong advocate of the concept that minimising the time you spend on the wrong side of the road is a good thing.

Mmm the problem with 'fast cruising' is you tend to end up 'out front' with nobody to pick up reflections from.

Tried that, I always get rolled, especially being the sober driver driving people home. ALWAYS get pulled over.

not every speed camera box actually has a camera in it, it's a way to get people to slow down. BUT they shift the cameras around so you never know which speed camera box has a camera in it (also cheaper as less cameras been purchased) .

AMEN BROTHER We do drive performance cars and anyone that says they ""NEVER" speed is a liar. I too subscribe to the theory about less time on the other side of the road. I'd love to meet the person that while driving on a desserted back road doesn't drive over the limit and get a bit of a rush.

you should meet ,y father... Back in the day he had one freakin sweet worked vw beetle, now you'll be lucky to get him doing 95 on the open road... People get old, and usually slow down a little... Hell i drive a hell of a lot slower than i did when i was younger... Tickets are hella expensive...

I've had the Blitzen going on 3 years now and have only had 1 speed ticket and that was from a camera. Was only doing 57kph. Ah well that's not bad for 3 years and over 50 000 k's of driving. Talking of worked beetles, in Durban South Africa where I'm from there was a beetle with a porsche 911 turbo engine and modified running gear etc. Holy shit that thing was fast

My old man gives me loads of sh!t about occasionally driving a little bit quickly. But then he got an EZ30R Outback and the last road trip I was in that car he 'accidently' nudged it up to some entirely "inappropriate" speeds on a passing lane. Haha.
