HELP!!

Cars idling is REALLY f@$%ed! Will idle normally and slowly start dropping all the way to about 200rpm Opinions and any ideas on cost to repair would be much appreciated

Unplug the AFM and see what happens?

Do you have a boost gauge at all? What\'s the idle reading?

Could be your TPS being out too.

Check for any CELs too.

Sorry! Cel?? I know afm but not the other abbreviations. Boost gauge is an autotechnica digital one and is reading -12 at start up. I know it should show -14 but whaddya do? Seems to read positive boost fine. Checked filter and ensured cold air box is properely sealed

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor - if this is dirty it could cause Idle issues and if the AFM is dirty or stuffed it can cause idle or boost issues

theory is the same but his model will have the idle control servo on the throttlebody. its easier to pull out and clean

could be your idle control but likely a vacuum leak or as mentioned AFM or TPS

before you start pulling things apart, find out if any CEL\'s are logged. its always the first place to start.

i\'ve never worked on your model sorry, you\'ll have to find out how to do that first

My car did this same thing ages ago, does yours feel like it\'s gonna stall when you\'re stopped at lights etc? Ours turned out to be the O2 sensor and it didn\'t throw a code, did after a couple days but yea, maybe look at O2 sensor or AFM.

Search "ecu reset" uses the plugs under the dash.

1999, yes it has obd11, BUT a lot of readers can\'t read the older subies. use the plugs technique, it\'s free.

Ok, pulled AFM plug and put back in. Joined black plugs under dash- do I need to join the green ones? The check engine light flashed but didn\'t seem to be in any sort of sequence...sooo confusded lol

you really need to use the search button for the cel. It flashes short an long flashes count each and put the 2 numbers together to get a C.E.L code.

It would make sense. That idle vacuum is pretty poor which is a sign of a leak too.

Have you changed anything recently which could have caused this

Afm is a very very common fault with these but it\'s not always the case. Could be as simple as a idle solenoid being gummed up & stuck.

Does the car drive ok apart from the bad idle?

LOL!! Thanks Sly Car runs perfectly other than this issue. Vacuum hoses were replaced with silicon ones and are a very tight fit! Did the plugs, reset ECU last night and seems to be running good Other info that might be helpful, car has been fitted with HKS SSQV IV. The plastic filter bit that comes with this broke but was rangied back together and I can\'t hear/feel any air escaping from it. Have blocked the hose but maybe I should get a decent blanking plug? Also where can I get the gasket for the idle control valve? Found a post on SLi that says this gets gummed up from oil vapor and replacing the gasket can help. Will a catch can help prevent this in the future? Many thanks for all the help guys

make your own gasket from acl gasket paper. you can get it from ripco or supercrap.

did the issue arise just after you replaced the vac hoses? is it the cheapest vac hose you could get?

could be possible that the wall of the hose isnt strong so under vacuum the hose sucks together and closes up

wait, was this before or after you fitted the \'HKS SSQV IV. The plastic filter bit that comes with this broke but was rangied back together\'

also, you said \'99 RSK B4 ? i didn\'t know they needed a gasket for the ICV. isnt it just a rubber O ring around the stepper? (i\'m not sure)

Was after but a considerable while after the BOV was fitted. My bad, it is a rubber grommet but I couldn\'t think of the right word at the time :-[

So where do I get said grommet please? And to clean it out and change it I apparently need to depressurize the coolant system? How do I do this (I know, real noob question but I\'m trying to learn the practical side of things lol )

Workshop have said the hose is ok, it\'s very thick hosing lol I got it from scarles, I guess they have a good rep?? ??? ???

No, 100% false

Removing and cleaning the idle motor is a simple job, it has two screws and it pops right out, and you can clean it with kero/brakeleen/degreaser/whatever you have on hand

I don\'t know where to get the rubber seal from but someone on here is bound to, all else fails subaru will stock it
