Car stereo installer, cash job Christchurch area?

I\'m looking at buying a new stereo and really can\'t stomach the idea of paying over $200 for someone to install it. I\'ve called around and that seems to be the ballpark figure thrown around.

$200 is a fair price for an expert ICE install, especially if you are going to use good equipment.

It\'s the Scottish blood flowing through my veins, I can\'t help it, lol. I\'m only wanting to get the stereo installed for now and use the factory speakers. At some point down the road I might upgrade the speakers?

For a headunit, speakers, and maybe even an amp thrown in.

For a straight headunit, going rate is $50. Maybe $60 if you use a loom adapter.

What I\'m getting at is where on earth did you get quoted $200 to install a headunit? Looking at your other thread that\'s the only thing you\'re changing.

If you\'re talking about installing a new headunit, all 4 speakers, maybe getting an amp wired in, then yeah it\'s gonna cost you a couple of hundy at a shop.

Pretty simple to do yourself. All you gotta do is find out power/subpower and you\'re good to go. Basic basic stuff

Methven Motor Services, guy reckoned at least 2 hours at nearly $80 an hour and maybe more to make brackets? I thought he was taking the piss, maybe he was.

Or get the adaptor loom thing from repco for $20, undo like 6 screws, unplug old, plug in new, reverse the process to put it back together

If it\'s another legacy you\'ve bought you can get the head unit out in about 2 mins assuming all the screws are even still there - lift gearstick surround up, lift out ash tray, pop out the cubby holder thingy, pull out stereo surround, 4 screws around the stereo cradle and donesies

It\'s got a double din unit in and I doubt I\'d have to take the whole centre console out to get it out and a new one in? It looks like it\'s just slid in if that makes sense?

Yeah but... how will you undo the screws which hold the head unit in there with the fascia in place

Seriously, 2 min job to pop the centre console out, its just a couple of phillips head screws at the bottom and "clips" at the top

Centre console meaning just the plastic surrounding the air con and stereo etc - not the whole armrest etc bit

Make sure it\'s a gt otherwise he won\'t be a master car expert.

Give him some random front mount piping and and a cannon muffler in exchange and he\'ll do it in a flash

That\'s because he\'s a mechanic not a stereo installer.

A standard DIN shaped unit using loom adapters is a 15 minute job.

30 mins if it\'s a Honda and you have to hack some awful arrangement for the pocket involving large washers and loom tape.

go to a reputable local installer, Autosound and security do a good job, if there are any issues that can sort it as they go.

What car is it into? e.g. some legacys require more work than most.

oh and it won\'t cost you $200
