Track hack/project car build cost?

There's not much point racing a car you don't like though. And I'd have thought you'd be spending a considerable sum trying to get WRX performance out of an MX5. Especially at street sprints and autocrosses where they get eaten for breakfast by stock WRXs. And do you really want to take your dogs for a trip in the MX5? Civics and Integras are great club cars, but can't really compete with a GF8 for non-race practicality. And see my initial point =]

Yea it's sorta retarded to say race a Honda on a Subaru forum lol. I mean sure you might save a bit of coin but you could argue a go kart is cheaper to race than a civic so why not that? And hey why not just grab a motorbike for racing they're cheaper too... The logic is flawless.

I laughed when you said about getting the dogs in an MX5. Getting them in would be easy, keeping them in would be the hard bit.

Still thinking about a BG legacy as well.

The racing part is more for fun than anything else, not too worried about being overly competitive just wanting to improve my skills, if I did really enjoy and wanted to be more competitive then I would think about a serious dedicated track car.

As I have said previously the title may be a little misleading as I was a bit drunk when I wrote it

Totally disagree. The guy primarily wants to race on a budget. The advice he is getting is good. I love Subarus but the fact of life is that they cost the F***ing earth to race. End of story.

Subarus do make a great club car in stock form and personally i find 4wd more forgiving than fwd in sticky situations.

Then the competitive factor all comes down to are you doing it for fun or to be competitive. Fastest hillclimb car up here on a certain course is an old n/a escort and the driver hadnt raced it in a few years...says a lot for the corners.

As to which sub chassis suits best it all comes down to what you want. For an easy to maintain, agile fast out of the box chassis with an arse a v3-6 sti gf8 works best or v5/6 if the budget stretches and you like the moderner styling. With a v3/4 wrx you can convert to sti spec easily enough injectors/afm/ecu/turbo where with a v5/6 wrx you can really only throw on a turbo before you need a link. They do have the same maf/injectors as the sti so cheaper to link in that regard.

A bg5 is a bigger wagon but the practicality is grouse. Only issue is it needs to be single turbo and that leaves you at the mercy of the guy who did the conversion.

For no fuss get a v4 sti gf8, throw brake pads, rear swaybar and tyres at it along with whatever routine maintenance it requires and have a bit of fun.

eh still don't see the logic...? It's a subaru forum. Why bother commenting that at all?  It doesn't answer the questions he was asking which was obviously directed at a Subaru specific track build. And there are plenty better cars than a mx5 or honda to race/many other competitive cheap racing options out there that trump an mx5 or honda. Not saying they're bad cars or that your statement is incorrect just it really has no place in this topic.

Also, this a Subaru Owners and Enthusiasts forum... not:

a Subaru Evangelist forum,

a Subaru Salesman forum

a Subaru Fanatics forum

a Subaru Pimps forum.

Maybe you are one of the above?

Before a flamewar starts over something silly, lets just stop it here with this.

It's not often that I agree with Loner, however in this instance I do.

To advise someone on a singular type of car for racing purposes because we're a 'Subaru community' would be rather silly.

It's absolutely crucial for someone looking to get into motorsport, to look at different types of cars and manufacturers, and definitely to be advised of the pitfalls and upsides of each.

Now, if they've got a preference and I believe @SpeedySub's preference here is something for a weekend warrior track car is that of the Subaru flavour to put dogs in and other people, then that's cool. Doesn't hurt to be well informed though.

I only mentioned the mx5 since I was literally in the exact same situation so it seemed like reasonable advice. I sold my sti because it was just too expensive to track and also keep as a daily driver, and bought the mx5 because it was cheap fun and i dont have to worry about breaking it. Its not actually any slower than my wrx on a track, more fun to drive, way cheaper parts, and much easier to work on. Engines are 1/5-1/10th the cost, gearboxes 1/4 etc etc.

But he said he needs something more practical so that rules them out. Mines practical enough in that I can fit all my tools needed, and bags to go to taupo playdays, but anything bigger than a  fox terrier might have issues fitting in it...

To everyone that's replied thanks for you input.  Even if it's not been well received by every one.  If it was going to be a dedicated track car that was taken to a lot of events I might of considered something other than a subaru. But as it's going to be a multipurpose car and I wanted turbo awd and I decided to stay with subaru. Part of the reason is that there is so much good info on builds and upgrades here and it's mostly friendly advice and stupid questions aren't automatically ridiculed.

Still waiting for the money to come through and a few issues at home mean that I may have to wait a little longer. Gives me more time to change my mind on what type of sub to get.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok so about time I updated this thread,

I have found a car that I am going to check out and hopefully buy in couple of weeks.

Yes its a Subaru, yes its a legacy, no its not a wagon, apart from that I will wait till I have the car to let you know what it is (don't want to jinx it). But will be a good project to restore to its former glory and take to events. Looking to do the Gumboot rally in the next year or two! after a few autocross/grasskhanas. Will be a good car to take the Misses out for a fang in too.

Stay tuned!

You won't regret your choice! What mods have been done to it? That's a mighty rare car (arguably worth more in stock than modified lol)

Not much. has a td05 turbo, sti inverted shocks and wrx ecu. pretty much stock standard.

What are you plans with it? Could look at enduring solutions daughter boards which are fully tunable at around $700 nzd landed

Planning on slowly restoring as much as I can back to stock. In the mean time will be taking it for weekend drives/club meets/autocross. I will be buying a VF8 on Monday as part of the restoration. also have to get used to the power! this is my first turbo car.

Hows the td05h for you? I find mine super laggy compared to a vf8, like considerably slower spool to full boost

which is why im strongly against installing a front mount with all that pipeing i wont get boost till like 5krpm hahah

but once the boost hits its only marginally more powerful than the vf8

maybe a tune is in order

ooop, just read it yours first turbo car, so you wont know what a vf8 feels like -_-

Nice nice, sounds like you have a goal :) I highly recommend getting a set of tyres before anything else(bang for buck this was the best thing I did to mine lol, picked up a set of semi slicks for like 200), from there I would goto parts ouq and re-kit the whole rear subframe with new bushes, then maybe alloy arms with new bushes/sway bars after all that other stuff done. I would stick with the td05, imo only an honest purest would be able to pick that difference. Td05 are also good for high power later on when you want to do injectors/tune

Was awesome dealing with you too @SpeedySub Very sad to see the car go though :(

Although it did sound awesome going down the street, the first time I've heard someone else drive it from the outside haha.

It was a great drive home. loved the sound and the power was soo nice. made the passing lanes so much easier. nice for a long drive

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
