i remember back in very early 90's the boys who drove up n down colombo st and the Aves in christchurch were referred to as "stinky's"

Cortinas, Escorts, HQ's etc were the norm LOL, and a lot of rota's of course

Stinkys were more like bogans really, diving fast listening to heavy metal.

The car scene certainly became trendy after the likes of FnF movies.

Plus understandably a generation looking for an ulturnative to bar hoping and night clubing, the car scene was mint!

Back in the day we used to convoy in our rota's, we always had a eye on us by the cops but we never really were a public nuisance, apart from the noise i spose.

But i cant help feel that in those days we had more respect in general.

I agree, my point was more that stats from the generation before would probably reveal a similar trend. As would the generation before etc.

Not to sure where I'm going with this, probably more trying to put a finger on how scary things might be when were all drawing pensions.

As far as singling out car manufacturers, Subaru's and evo's seem to have a mix, sure you see a lot of what we would call 'boy racers' being a pain in the ass in horrible examples of the car, but the majority are tidy examples driven by us 'enthusiasts' when you look at Nissan however, the majority are bogan as hell, illegal screamer pipes the whole nine yards, you don't often see Nissan 'enthusiasts' , so when I think 'boy racer' , ugly ass Cefiros are what springs to my mind, but hey I'm obviously biased haha

Yea all depends on the car. Got pulled up in my black v8 sti and the cop just gave me a smile and said you must be working hard for ya coin being 21 at the time. Then last week pulled up in a v5 type r and got the whole look over the car etc

I've driven subarus for three years now and only been pulled up once, and that was when they were ACTUALLY doing (semi)random checks. I think the cops in Wellington tend to focus more on the dodgy slammed lancers and Hondas than they do those of us more law abiding fellows

That's not very nice !!! Yes there is a lot of nissans with screamers - but it's all the same - there's a lot of subys with them too and mitsis too

There's people out there doing that sort of shit with all sorts of cars

When I had my gf8 I always got dirty looks from coppas - got pulled and had the whole car checked over and never got pinged cos everything was in order . It did scream boy racer as one cop worded it - pretty funny when a cop says Ur custom work is good quality tho

I think the difference between boy racers and enthusiasts is legality, everyone speeds (I mean c'mon lol) , but an enthusiast will cruise through any checkpoint or check while a boy racer will get stickered, impounded or taken inside the rbt bus.

Will always be labelled, but whats different between it to say us calling someone in a different car a nana or ricer or any other label for that matter?

If you run legal, names shouldn't mean a thing, cops can call you one but they can't fine you for not agreeing with your choices.

I think we should change the boy racer definition to people who drive holdens, that way all the cops will be boy racers, and then the police will have to change, and we'll define whatever cars the police drive as boy racer cars until they change all of them to subaru's, like the pursuit cars in the UK

I haev always laid claim to being a OM Racer..or Old Man Racer. Although now Im a bit of a nana according to my youngest although his "boy racer" friends still want my car.. I prefer to think Im OM Racer(Rtd).

The douchebag I mean drifting scene is the worst of the boy racers, because they willingly lose traction around corners often blind corners, endangering heaps more than themselves tbh.they might be halfway through a drift, and a campervan comes around the corner at 20km with a line of traffic from here to hong kong behind it, he hits the camper, and all the other vehicles pile-up because they were all travelling so slow they'd fallen asleep and all hit each other rear ending and such at 20km/h....
