Hi guys, I'm wanting more information on cert costs for the removal of factory steering wheel with airbag. The car is 19 years old so it meet the LVVTA age requirements for removal but if it's gonna cost $800 odd dollars then I'm not gonna bother. Cheers

Steering wheel is worn out and the perforated leather has been ruined by 19 years of driving. And yes, i could just try and find a good condition factory replacement but if I can go and buy a nice aftermarket one then why not?

Airbags are good for stopping internal decapitation and face getting wrapped around the steering wheel.

You could alternatively go look for a damd steering wheel, which replaces the wheel bit but retains the original airbag? Or go get the wheel redone?

I Also would love to do this, I would love an after market wheel with some dish that pushes the wheel a bit closer to my driving position for when on the track but dont want to muck around with a huge cert as the car is already certed :(

Agreed but also theres is evidence that shows that 1990s vehicles with airbags fitted that the airbag systems won't always work anyway. Which is why under LVVTA regs you are free to remove them as their reliability is significantly less after 10years let alone 20 years. But thanks :)

True, and your brakes might not work either... better rip them out too. Your life buddy :)

Not really the same there. There are maintenance tasks and procedures you can do on brake systems. To the best of my knowledge, there isn’t anything available for airbags...

That's a difference... a similarity is "removing a safety item because it might not work".

If he wants to remove the chance that a life saving device will work, good luck to him.

A basic cert starts @ around $550 regardless of Mods, they check the whole car

even your rim size is on the plate, even if OEM / standard, then your locked into that size, same as ride height

swap rims? = re-cert or if you have another set in your shed you can have them checked & added to the 'Sheet' at time of Cert

as is my understanding of the system from another forum I'm on that has a handy cert guy to answer questions

sorry I don't know the process of removing & satisfying the cert man with Airbag removal, I would simply suggest ask your local cert guy
