Launching a subaru

hi, i have only started driving a manual transmission car for about 2 months now. i still can't master launching/fast off the line. can someone give me some tips on what rpm, clutch position etc i should be in. i was told i should not rev it to like 7000 rmp and drop teh clutch as it will destroy the clutch in a 4wd. is this true?

To be fair this is the racing section, he may have a legit reason for asking...so im gonna throw in my real 2 cents.

Personally I learnt how through a bit of practice doing street drags (LEGAL!!!!) and I found that about 4-5 thou RPM and not dumping the clutch but kind of sliding off of it gives you a good starting point to learn if your willing to sacrifice your clutch and root Gearboxes at a rate of knots.

Launch from to low in the revs you will bog down, too high you will wheel spin/burn off a truckload of clutch for a less effective launch.

I had a few driveline failures in my current WRX, which ironically enough has hadmuch less launch abuse than my previous WRX which had very few driveline issues.

I certainly wouldn't recommend launching your car unless your willing to replace stuff... Often. And if you are just limiter launch it :D

COME ON boxes are made to be broken :D :D :D ;D ;D

your launch is going to depend on a lot of factors, how much power you got, torque, grip, weight of your wheels, gearbox ratio, type of clutch bla bla bla but thats all small parts just hold it at 6000rpm and slip the clutch or if u want to have limit it turn the wheel a but and drop the clutch ;D ;D FUN

best way to practise is low key 1/4 mile drags, for us in welli, the law's road in dannevirke was a good one, or slipway in welli - where we had long straight runs, and did donuts near the end of straight.

i'm a bit rusty myself; but generally you keep constantly blipping the throttle to keep the turbo spooling before you drop the clutch and floor it, 4500-5500rpm was my sweet spot but it varies on car and clutch setup, standard sti clutches aren't any good for this and most likely will slip

I have to do this to get off the start line quickly at motorsport events. There's a knack to it for my car. MIne likes aroung 5500rpm, then I let out the clutch fast (not side-stepping) off it. Sometimes it goes like magic, sometimes it bogs if the revs are a little low.

Start launching at the limiter and then lower your launch revs each time until you find the tipping point between grip and spin. A bit of wheelspin is a good thing as it reduces the loading on your box/driveshafts and is much better than bogging as it keeps the revs up too.

Also, when on the start line, ease the clutch out till it bites (only do this just before launching as your clutch won't like it). And hold it there with the handbrake, this helps stop shock loading the drivetrain when you completely drop the clutch.

The main thing is to practice. But remember motorsport and Subaru's don't go together without the right gear and you have to expect sh*t to break as a result... So do it all at your own peril, but while it lasts enjoy it.

If you let the clutch out a tiny bit till it starts to bite between 4-5k the pull the handbrake up a couple of notches itl build some boost as itl have load, then its a juggling act between timing the handbrake/clutch release at the same time

yup 5something thousand let clutch out at right speed slides back my sunroof! weeeeeeeeee

Obviously the car goes into emergency flight mode and pre-opens escape hatches for occupants. That's an advanced feature only a few cars are known to have.

first of all. did i mention i was gona do this on the road?? this is the racing section and i was asking this because i was gonna take the car to a track day! wtf gave u the impression i was gona do it on the streets?

it was supposed to be a sensible question since it's in the racing section. btw thanks for the few sensible answers, i will go try that out.

edited - angry carry on isnt really required. ive jumped in and removed to stop spam wars off topic.

This probably gave people the wrong impression, most people who have only been driving a manual for 2 months wouldn't be hitting the track

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
