In case anyone cares the stuff at gull e85 is only registering as e60 now, no where near 85%.

Have been running my wrx on 91 for the last couple of months but want to switch to 98, will there be an instant difference or will it take time for the car to "learn" the higher octane?

There will be a somewhat instant difference but you’ll need to reset the ECU for it to forget all it’s current adjustments for 91 and make the most use of the better fuel

I think the average Subaru mechanic would have better dreams than a basic rebuild of a retard's car who doesn't want to spend any money fixing it.

Not to res a dead thread, I wish I would have seen this at the time. I deliver 98 to varies Auckland fuel stations pretty much daily. Mobil’s 98 does not contain ethanol. Auckland to New Plymouth, if it’s a mobil station and has 98, it comes from Mount Maunganui and there is no ethanol. I’m not on the terminal side of the business, but it’s my understanding that the major difference between bp and mobil is the additive package.
