do wagons make good track cars?

id bet half of it is also to do with 'cool' and racing ppl would far rather a sedan that hatch. Extend this to drifting, where 'go fast' isnt really the aim, so you could possibly use either with little difference.

For drifting you want a light, stiff rear, no? wagon makes zero sense here :P Also, when the car is going sideways, and you look at the side profile of a wagon vs sedan... there are many arguments for sedan over wagon in drifting.

The idea of a hatch for rallying was a short wheel base I thought.

/quote]

That might make sense except that as far as I can find the wheelbase has grown in size for each of the three generations of chassis - most significantly with the third. It's all about the overhangs ...

I agree

The wheel base change between models is 10-25mm. And that change was only to better the suspension geometry as far as i can tell. The difference in wheelbase would be pretty negligible

Changes in centre of gravity make a big difference to handling. Weight up high is a penalty

FWIW

CD has nothing to do with frontal area.

The main reason wagons have higher drag is the rear creates greater wake turbulence. Airflow can not follow the steep rear end of a wagon. Whereas on a sedan the rear window angle is much shallower.

The new 2011 sti sedan has a 5km/h higher top speed than the wagon version

well it does have an effect, but since the front is near identical, it has little effect between the two models. But the rest is true, most of the drag comes from vortices's produced at the back, I never mentioned this because I thought it was inherently obvious haha.

Interesting fact, formula one cars have drag coefficients of around 1, because of the wings basically. It's also why their top speed is rather lack lustre.

So the difference would be minimal at best really?

Depends - if you just wanted a fun track car it doesn't matter as said earlier.

But say you wanted to race in NZGT or time attack then having an extra 5-10km/h might make the difference between making that pass or not or posting the fastest time.

haha I doubt that people spending over 100k on a racecar would care about "cool" factor if they could build the same car in wagon form that was 0.1sec a lap faster. Yet you don't see wagons all through GT series' around the world. What about V8 supercar wagons? With 4wd...

Drifting isn't racing anyway, its ballet, or syncronised swimming, both of which aren't real sports cause they're judged by people and not a stopwatch ;):P

But also, to jump ship and go to the wagon side, how can this be up to 4 pages and no one has mentioned the greatest BTCC racer of all time ("greatest" purely cause the driver's were nuts and made gaps out of nothing, not based on results at all cause I don't remember if they did well, I just liked them);

Also glass is one of the heaviest things in the body work. Wagon's are severely disadvantaged here. And its all way up high.

Maybe someone should cut down the roof at the back of a GTB and make a fastback Legacy?

4 seat cabriolet? Oh god the horror that would be , but in all fairness what about the twin turbo v10 Audi wagon which name escapes me right now , that thing is cool and fast and also that BP racecar a few years ago that thing was awesome (I really wish that I was on my computer and not my phone writing this )

The thing about respect; why would anyone care whether or not they have yours? That's a bit pretentious isn't it? Ultimately the best respect to gain is from those whom you yourself respect. Clearly this reciprocality does not exist.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
